There’s something about the 60s that we just can’t move on from. The feminist movement was taking off to new heights, mid-century design was burgeoning with clean, minimal lines, and women were embracing their sexuality and style with timeless retro and mod flair. Girl boss and SUSI founder Bianca cherry-picked her favorite vintage styles and took inspiration from her childhood memories during her design process and gave them a modern spin.
Here’s the story behind a few select styles from the debut collection.
Music and femme power are major influences here at SUSI, so we jumped on the opportunity to honor Veronica Bennett, lead singer of popular music group The Ronettes. These ladies were the only girl group in history to tour with The Beatles, so, yea, talk about major!
Being different is hard, but being different and accepting it as a child is even harder. One of our favorite children’s storybook heroes ever, Matilda is a total inspiration for little girls learning to love and trust themselves. Stuck in a disappointing home life and oppressive learning environment, Matilda escapes into her favorite novels and embraces what makes her magical. SUSI’s black, patent Matilda flats embody the spirited schoolgirl with sugar and sass.
You’ve already been introduced to our furry feline mascot, Simone, but did you know she was named after French philosopher and feminist Simone de Beauvoir? She wrote novels on philosophy, politics and social issues, and is best known for her treatise The Second Sex, a detailed analysis of women’s oppression and a foundation of contemporary feminism. Hey Simone is designed for women on their never-ending quest for form and function without sacrificing the lift.
